Phytoestrogens are substances of vegetable origin which have the hormonal estrogenic property. They are present in vegetable world and in high concentrations in soy.
Although they have not a steroid nature (they are heterocyclic phenols), they are functionally and in part structurally alike the 17 beta estradiol.
Isoflavones, precursor of phytoestrogens, to be absorbed have to be biologically active and after their ingestion have to be metabolized and activated by the intestinal bacterial flora, which first hydrolyze these combined molecules (glycosides).
